Re-education through labor - China Take August 14 - BONTV

Posted: 26 Aug 2012 10:04 PM PDT

o to bon.tv to watch the full episode The recent case of a woman called Tang Hui has brought China's notorious laojiao or "Re-education through labor" system under the spotlight again. Tang, from Yongzhou, in Hunan province, is the mother of a girl who was kidnapped six years ago, raped and then forced into prostitution - when she was aged just 11 years old. By the time she was rescued at the end of 2006 she had contracted venereal diseases, which mean she cannot have a child. Tang spent six years fighting to have those responsible brought to justice. She claims that due to obstruction by the local police, the case wasn't heard until this year. On June 5, the Hunan Provincial Higher People's Court finally sentenced two of the prostitution ring's leaders to death; four others were given life sentences for rape, and another was jailed for 15-years jail term. However, after the ruling, Tang continued to petition to demand the death penalty for all seven defendants, and also called for an investigation into local police officers' roles in the affair. Earlier this month the same police sent Tang to a reeducation-through-labor camp -- a form of summary detention that requires no trial or court -- for 18 months. However Tang appealed, the news spread online - particularly on Weibo, China's micro-blogging platform -- and in the uproar the decision was reversed and Tang released.

o to www.bon.tv to watch the full episode Follow us on Weibo weibo.com Starting last month, foreigners who work in central China's Wuhan can also participate in the social security system the city offers. The new policy will let foreigners in China enjoy the same basic medical insurance and other forms of social insurance that locals enjoy. This policy which will not only ensure foreign employees basic social services in China, but may also help to improve China's social security system. However, not all Chinese people support the new policy. Some people say it is unfair treatment, since there are still many Chinese employees who can't join the social security system due to complex residency requirements. They question the motivation for this policy, and are appealing to local governments to complete the social security system for Chinese citizens first. Experts in public management said the policy itself is reasonable but that it is necessary to earn people's trust in the nation's policy to ensure social harmony, the government's perennial priority. There are currently more than 100000 Americans working in China.
