Some critics point out that ordinary people have become so desperate that they choose this path to show their strong protest. Due to the fact that the judicial system has failed the people, people no longer trust the authorities. On Aug. 27, the Shaoyang City water company party officials held an internal meeting. Shi Yanfei, a retired worker, broke into the meeting room with a gasoline bottle. She poured gasoline and then ignited it. Three people died and four were injured. It is understood that Shi Yanfei was unhappy about her second child not being hired by the company. She suspected that the supervisors illegally made such an arrangement, and thus, it would result in unfair employment opportunities. In actuality, in China's state-owned monopoly industries, secret operations are widespread. The unspoken rule is the main problem for recruitment. Mainland lawyer Li Tiantian says ordinary people will give up their lives only out of desperation. Li Tiantian: "That ordinary people assassinate or kill government officials is an act of justice. Because of the injustice in the society and in the government, people have no choice but follow their own laws." The Internet writer Jing Chu ...

Lumberjacks gathered in Belarus to compete in the 2012 World Logging Championships. Full Story: Russian lumberjack Alexander Sokolov won the 2012 World Logging Championships held in Belarus on Saturday. [Alexander Sokolov, Contestant]: "We looked at the trees yesterday, it was windy and we were calculating which way we should cut the trees. The Belarusian team were favorites at these championships, but were upset in some disciplines by the Russians, including Sokolov, and the Germans. Marco Trabert of Germany took the gold medal for the Combined Cuts contest. The event has been held every two years since 1970. 50-foot Tennis Racket Swings at Guinness World Record

Posted: 28 Aug 2012 10:36 AM PDT

A group attempts to create the world's largest tennis racket in Queens, New York. Full Story: Students in Queens, New York have created a giant replica of Billie Jean King's tennis racket in an attempt to set a Guinness World Record. It was displayed on Monday, August 27th, the same day as the opening of the US Open in Flushing. It was hoisted above the intersection at 85th Avenue and 164th Street in Jamaica Hills, Queens. The racket is 50-feet long, and is an exact replica of the old-school wooden rackets with plastic tube strings. It took ten days to build, and 30 to 35 people to build it. It is only to be displayed for one day, but its creators hope that it will eventually be moved to a children's museum. Ashrita Furman is the organizer of the event, and worked with his spiritual group on the project. [Ashrita Furman, Organizer]: "Well this is an old fashioned racket. We got permission from Guinness to model the racket after an old fashioned wood racket. People basically don't use wood rackets anymore but they said as long as it's actually exactly to scale and is used with the same exact materials, then we could use an old fashioned wood racket. And so this is the world's largest tennis racket." The meditation class funded the project in order to honor their spiritual teacher, Sri Chimnoy. The late leader shares a birthday with the opening date of the US Open, and once played tennis with Billie Jean King.

China Focus - Chinese Editor's Suicide Sparks Censorship Debate

Posted: 27 Aug 2012 05:07 PM PDT

Last week, Xu Huaiqian, the editor of the Dadi (Earth) publication run by the Chinese Communist Party's People's Daily, committed suicide. It's being reported that Xu had a history of depression, but his death has sparked debate on China's internet about press freedom and censorship. Before he died, he said in an interview that, "My pain is I dare to think, but I don't dare to speak; if I dare to speak, I don't dare to write, and if I dare to write, there is no place to publish." Xu's death also came days after Burmese authorities lifted some of their draconian press censorship. Censorship in China works differently than censorship in Burma, but are Chinese authorities likely to loosen censorship at all? And why did Xu's death hit home for so many in China? In a country with millions of opinions but no free press, how can people find the truth?

China's Media Strangled for Burying Bloodiness

Follow us on TWITTER: twitter.com Like us on FACEBOOK: www.facebook.com China's state media is known as the "mouthpiece" of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). The news censorship and "self-discipline" has been criticized by the global community. Recent penalties and rewards given to a media outlet sparked a heated debate among the public in China. The event seemed relaxed, but may be hidden with "appalling bloodiness". On August 26, columnist Lu Guoping commented on 'Tencent Weibo (micro blog)'. "I saw these two notices on the wall of penalties and rewards when I went to a media outlet yesterday." Media reported that China Youth Daily were given rewards and penalties on August 26. The two orders targeted for two news reports, respectively. The rewarded news was about Yang Mi, who encountered criticism for just winning the title of 'most popular singer'. The other one which was penalized was called, "Dalian corpse processing factory suspected of using executed prisoners' bodies for human exhibits." China Youth Daily was accused of illegally reproducing the news from Southern Metropolis Daily. The News Office of the CCP State Council thus issued a punishment order, and fined 500 Yuan. Why was the media punished for issuing or reprinting a news report? Are there any secrets buried under this official pretext? The source of bodies for the Dalian corpse processing factory has recently aroused widespread public attention. Dr. Wang Zhiyuan, spokesman for World Organization to ...

Follow us on TWITTER: twitter.com Like us on FACEBOOK: www.facebook.com Another traffic accident, another shuttle bus catching fire, with many passengers killed... On August 26, another highway accident took place in Yan'an. Media reports are concerned that Mainland China's highways have become a high-risk area. Why do Chinese buses keep violating traffic rules? Why do Chinese people still take such buses? Our report will answer these questions. At 2:00am on August 26, a double-decker bus collided with a heavy methanol tanker on the Baomao highway. This triggered a serious fire, as leaking methanol quickly started to burn, according to Mainland media reports. Only the bus skeleton was left. The bus was deformed by the impact, so passengers could not be evacuated from the front door. 36 people died, including the driver, with only 3 survivors, who were sent to hospital. Taiwanese 'China Times' reported that Mainland China's highways have become a high-risk area in the world. China's official statistics show a total of 62000 deaths in traffic accidents last year. Over 25 large-scale accidents caused over 10 deaths each. From 2000 to 2010, about 900000 Chinese people have died from traffic accidents. Tricks in War Against Censorship

Posted: 27 Aug 2012 08:15 PM PDT

Follow us on TWITTER: twitter.com Like us on FACEBOOK: www.facebook.com In recent years mainland authorities have established what believed to be, the worlds largest internet monitoring censorship. Research carried out at University of California in Berkeley, UCB along with 'Sina Microblog', three 'other' case sensitive words have become blacklisted upon the web. This means, with the emergence of this new type of network media, the war is escalating between the official's review of the system and the netizens' anti-censorship. Internet users are constantly creating new words, leaving the authorities struggling to block these off. China Digital Times website, founded in the US at UCB, began collecting banned search words from Sina Microblog last April 2011. By August 2012, a total of 1543 'sensitive words' are said to be listed upon Sina Microblogs. Making an average 3.2 new words, deemed sensitive every day. Founder of the Global Freedom of Information Movement, Zhang Xinyu, commented to NTD how, as a regime, CCP is now faced with the global threat of modern network media. With its constant need to escalate their network and media blockages. Zhang Xinyu: "CCP relies on lies and violence to maintain its regime.
