Go to www.bon.tv to watch the full episode Follow us on Weibo weibo.com The New York Times has reported that some economic indicators in China are being inflated by roughly 1 or 2 percentage points as local officials want to downplay the severity of the country's economic slowdown. The paper reported that "government officials in some cities are overstating economic output, tax receipts, corporate revenue and profits" as based on company executives in China and Western economists. But China's National Bureau of Statistics, which compiles most of the country's economic statistics, denied that any economic data was overstated. Currently, China's purchasing manager's index has been shrinking for 8 straight months. This index is a good barometer of the country's manufacturing sector. Apart from the PMI, a look at the electricity production and consumption are also signs of the economic activity. Some experts say that skepticism on the accuracy of Chinese economic data is nothing new. But the timing on these questions being raised could be linked to the upcoming changeover in the countries top leadership.
