The rainy season in south China has brought heavy rains covering most of the southern provinces. Coastal areas, in particular, have seen flooding in the streets, leaving many vehicles trapped. On top of all that, typhoon Talim is also bearing down on the southern coast.

The drizzle usually associated with rainy season have become heavy downpours. In the coastal city of Shanghai, the last day of rain was well-above usual for June.

In the nearby province of Zhejiang, the provincial capital Hangzhou has seen many streets disappear under rising floodwaters. A 100 square meter area has been completely covered by water.

All this, as China prepares for the first typhoon of the year that might make a serious impact on the country.

Qian Chuanhai, director of National Meteorological Center, says, "Talim will be the 5th Typhoon of this year. But the first four have little affect to China. Talim, no matter whether it will land in China, will start to show its power on Wednesday before it weakens."

Experts say Talim may bring 50 to 100 millimetres of precipitation to Fujian province in the next 24 hours. It's also likely to cause storms in the southern coastal provinces.

China's national meteorological centre has issued a storm blue alert and warned local authorities to prepare for possible geological disasters.
