Watch: Stephen Colbert On Asian Immigrants In America

Posted: 24 Jun 2012 07:47 PM PDT

The New York Times reported last week, citing Pew Research Center, that, "Asians have surpassed Hispanics as the largest wave of new immigrants to the United States, pushing the population of Asian descent to a record 18.2 million and helping to make Asians the fastest-growing racial group in the country." It didn't take long for Stephen Colbert of the Colbert Report to respond to this "threat," first suggesting a "Super Awesome Wall of China," and when he realized that wouldn't work, electrified steel floors around America to prevent Chinese immigrants from digging their way in. Also: "Nation, we're being boxed in. Mexicans do the jobs we don't want to do, and Asians do the jobs we're not able to do." Win.

Ai Weiwei: Bad News And Good

In the past few weeks, news about Ai Weiwei has spiked. Here are a few articles with the bad news:

Now some good or at least interesting news:

With Great Difficulty, We’re Going To Avoid Pussy Galore Puns Here

We fashion ourselves cat lovers at Beijing Cream, but we had no idea that something called the International Famed Cats Exhibition (国际名猫展) happened yesterday in Beijing, as Alicia found out yesterday via China News. It was organized by the China Pearl Feline Fanciers Club and involved a contest of exotic cat breeds. (No word on who won.) More than 100 cats were at the exhibition, some of which you'll find in the pictures after the jump. And if you're wondering where to go to get your cat fix in Beijing, City Weekend has you covered.

Here’s What 5,000 Ducks Crossing The Road Looks Like On Video

Part 1, which is shorter, is here.

Remember Alicia's duck story last week? It eventually made its way to a whole lot of news outlets, which is curious, because just today I realized there's a video of "5,000 ducks" in China from April 2009. Strange how the news cycle works, right? And it's interesting how a story can remain obscure for so long just because it happened in a rural part of the country. To summarize what we think happened: China Foto Press, tipped off by whatever, published photos, which Beijing News picked up, which we blogged, and not long afterwards, Reuters, Daily Mail, Huff Post, ITN News, et al. were all telling us about this spectacle, first uploaded by YouTube user petuntsestone three years ago. (I don't mean to imply all those Western outlets got the story from us, mind you; I'm just proceeding chronologically.) I've put the above video on Youku for those in China after the jump. The ducks, as you'll see, are much swifter than you might expect, but about as annoying.

Be Mesmerized By This Old Man On Exercise Equipment

It's strange what goes viral and what doesn't. It seems this video was first posted on Youku seven days ago, then transferred to 56.com (unclear whether by the same person). On Youku, by far the bigger website, this video has 430 views. On 56.com: 334,000.

The original video description simply reads, "Old man, you're pretty awesome." I'll leave it at that. Youku video for those in China after the jump. (H/T Spark)

The Situation Is Excellent: The Week That Was At Beijing Cream

June 18 – June 24

Porn, porn, sex, and more porn. Someone in Henan pulled the greatest prank of the year when he hooked up porn — 20 minutes of it — to a public big-screen attached to a mall. A Chinese man was detained possibly for downloading porn, which is ridiculous. Here's a nude beach in Sanya, cleverly disguised. Stephon Marbury follows porn stars on Twitter — granted, other professional basketball players do as well, but Starbury's a favorite of this blog, since he plays in Beijing. A man ejaculated on a woman in the Shanghai subway.

Oh, yes, and SEX MUSHROOMS – now the most-viewed story of all-time on this site.

It wasn't all porn and scantily clad ladies this week, however. Hu Jintao did something, and state media gushed for absolutely all the wrong reasons. A Changchun bus driver ignored frightening chest pains to continue performing her duty. Didier Drogba announced on his website that he's coming to Shanghai, and apparently SlamBall is coming as well.

This past week was one of riots, too. Here's video of a short-lived but angry protest in Guangzhou after a Nigerian died in police custody, and here's a bunch of rowdy Guo'an fans destroying a Jaguar just because it was from Tianjin.

On the lighter side of the news: a monkey messes with a monk, a dad drags a toddler in a plastic crate, and 5,000 ducks cross the road. Just another week in China.

Fire on Leshan Road

Posted: 24 Jun 2012 03:40 AM PDT

Fire on Leshan Road A fire flared up on Leshan Road in Xujiahui at 4:40 this afternoon. We first noticed it when smoke started billowing out of a metal stack on the side of a building at 115 Leshan, at which point we called the fire department. A man blasted it with a fire extinguisher but only succeeded in flushing it out of the stack, where it caught onto a skewer stand tarpaulin and then soared up side of the building. [ more › ]

Sunday Movie: Senior Year

Posted: 23 Jun 2012 10:49 PM PDT

Slightly old, from 2007, but still timely, given that China's national college entrance exam (gaokao) was just two weeks ago, and this documentary is about how students at one particular high school prepare for that exam. This film, which won the Best Documentary award at the Hong Kong International Film Festival in 2006, has been viewed 2.6 million times on Youku. It's subtitled, so if you have nothing else to do on this rainy Sunday afternoon, give it a look.
