Go to bon.tv to watch the full episode As President Obama appeals to the US Supreme Court to overturn California's ban on same sex marriage, the issue is also making headlines here in China. First two women attempted to register their marriage in a Beijing registry office recently only to be told, as they expected, that it was not legal. Then a prominent sexologist, Li Yinhe, said that she would again be attempting to find deputies attending next week's annual meeting of China's legislature to sponsor her proposal for legalizing sex marriage. And in a further development, hundreds of parents of gay children sent an open letter to the same body - the NPC - also calling for a review of the current marriage law at the upcoming session. In the letter they points out there are around 60 million gays and lesbians in China, some of whom have been together for a decade, but they are still not legally even allowed to sign assent when their partner needs an operation. Other practical problems that such couples in China face involve adoption, inheritance and property rights.

Du Meng, an independent economist and President of China Enterprise Capital, posted that the average home price has gone up by 143% since 2003to a level of 5791 yuan ($930 per square meter). Back then the average cost per square meter was only 2381 yuan or $382: an annual growth of 10.3% in the past decade. But many disagree on how big the rise really is. Yangcheng Evening News quoted Qing Yi, chief economist at Hengtai Securities, as saying the average selling price of new homes has risen slightly over 13-fold in 25 years from 1987, an average of 55% per year. Go to bon.tv to watch the full episode Recently, a sign that appeared on a small restaurant in a busy tourist area of the capital near the forbidden city. It read: "This restaurant does not receive the Japanese, the Philippines, the Vietnamese and dog(s)." And just to ensure the insult wasn't lost in translation, it was written both in Chinese and English. So why were those nations singled out by this hospitable restaurateur? Well they are the closest of the no less than six jurisdictions with which China has territorial squabbles in the East and South China Seas. The others are Malaysia, Brunei and Taiwan. The sign paraphrases one which supposedly hung outside a park in Shanghai during colonial times that read "No Dogs and Chinese allowed". Although most historians agree that no such ever existed it has become an enduring part of modern folklore and is taught in the country's 'patriotic education'. While the owner in this case was forced to remove the sign the support for this post shows that extreme nationalist sentiments, with the help of periodic stoking by state media, are never far from the surface.

Go to www.bon.tv to watch the full episode Cognac from three major producers - Camus, Frapin and Remy Martin - may be on its way back to France after samples tested in China were found to contain excessive toxic plasticizers, according to reports in the French media. A large quantity of the liquor has now been sealed at ports in Shenzhen in south China, French newspaper Charente Libre said. It didn't detail the number of cases. The amount of plasticizers in some samples may have reached 30 milligrams per kilogram, it said. That was way above the level allowed in China, which sets the maximum amount of the chemical (DEHP) at 1.5 milligrams per kilogram, 0.3 for dibutyl phthalate (DBP), and 9 for di-isononyl phthalate (DINP). According to doctors, plasticizers can impair male sexual function and even cause liver cancer if consumed in large amounts. The newspaper quoted Patrick Piana, CEO of Remy Martin, as saying that the brandy producer's exporting procedures were up to standard. The French newspaper said that authorities in the town of Cognac had said poor quality plastic pipes could be the reason for the high readings as brandy was highly corrosive. The report will be of major concern to exporters in France as China has become the biggest market for liquor from the region with the volume of exports continually rising, according to industry insiders. More than 40 million bottles of cognac currently arrive in China in a year. In November, Jiugui, a type of Chinese liquor ...

His topic today concerns a topic we mentioned recently here on CT - a decision by China's Ministry of Environmental protection not to release the full findings of a five-year $150 million survey on soil and underground water pollution. A Beijing based-lawyer named Dong Zhengwei asked the Ministry to publish the data as it directly concerns the lives and well-being of Chinese citizens. However he was told the information had been classified as a "State Secret". Our blogger today asks on what grounds a government organization charged with protecting the environment can refuse to reveal the findings of a survey carried out at public expense - and purportedly aimed at protecting the health and safety of the country's citizens. Here's Yan's take on it: Although the regulations on disclosure of government information were published five years ago, various excuses are still used to avoid releasing such information. One of the most common of these is that the information sought is a state secret ... But soil pollution is something that affects people's health both directly and indirectly, through food, crops and underground water ... The government has a duty to publish information on something so closely linked to people's health. If the 'state secret' excuse is used to hide the truth, it could put many people in a dangerous situation ... Of course, if the soil pollution information is published, it may ...
