A tired pilot on an Air New Zealand flight between London and Los Angeles falls asleep twice. This prompted the New Zealand transport minister to call for more airline safety measures. Full story: This Boeing 777 is similar to the one in which an on-duty pilot fell asleep during a trans-Atlantic Air New Zealand flight on Thursday. The unnamed pilot reportedly fell asleep twice during the flight, tired from changing his hotel room three times the previous night due to air-conditioning problems. He fell asleep for about a minute each time. But luckily, he was not the only pilot on the flight deck. New Zealand transport minister, Gerry Brownlee, wants more airline safety assurances. [Gerry Brownlee, New Zealand Transport Minister]: "You've got big reputational issues here. This doesn't look good. Satisfy the public that you're making sure your pilots are not asleep on the job." The pilot won't face disciplinary action, as Air New Zealand wants its staff to report any other similar incidents. Posted: 02 Mar 2013 01:21 PM PST

Harlem Shake hits the Middle East with students in Tunisia staging a mass dance in front of the Ministry of Education in defiance. Full story: Dozens of students met in front of the Ministry of Education in the Tunisian capital on Friday afternoon (March 1) to dance the Harlem Shake. Thousands were expected to attend, but heavy rain may have discouraged many. Ismail Farek, a student in Tunis, said the gathering was a way for people to express themselves. [Ismail Farek, Senior Student]: "This is a way of expression, we were not able to express ourselves by talking, so we chose dancing to speak out. In addition, it became prohibited, so it increased our interest. It's exciting to defy the ban, it adds value to our action." In the past week in Tunisia there has been a wave of Harlem Shake dances in high schools and colleges. Despite concern that conservative Salfists would crack down on Friday's mass dance, there was no attempt to break up the gathering. Such happenings in the past week were broken up, sometimes with violence. The Harlem Shake dance craze that has been sweeping the globe hit Tunisia last week when Peres-Blancs students, a high school in a wealthy suburb of Tunis, broadcast on the Internet the first Tunisian Harlem Shake. Abdellatif Abid, Minister of Education, called it immoral and said there would be sanctions against students and the school's chief. Asma Moussa, who called for the shake-down on Facebook, said that the dance was symbolic of people's ...

Cardinals Start to Narrow Down Papal Candidates

Posted: 02 Mar 2013 09:48 AM PST

The Catholic cardinals in the Vatican will begin choosing papal candidates. The process starts early next week. Full story: Narrowing down lists of about a dozen potential popes to a handful of serious hopefuls will be one of the main tasks of the closed-door meetings that Catholic cardinals begin on Monday (March 4). The lists circulating in public were mostly drawn up by Vatican journalists based on private chats with Catholic prelates. One reason the process is so mysterious is that candidates do not announce their ambition and canvassing votes is taboo. While there are no official candidates, several names are frequently mentioned in Rome as "papabile" (potential pope). The list of names of hopeful candidates may change between now and when the conclave is held in mid-March. Dior on Cloud Nine with a Dreamy Collection

Posted: 02 Mar 2013 07:45 AM PST

Dior serves up a visual scrapbook as new twists on old inspirations are paraded on a cloud-covered catwalk. Full Story: Dior's creative director Raf Simons firmly integrated himself into the history of the brand on Friday (March 1) with an Autumn/Winter collection that tied his own personal inspirations to iconic Dior patterns. Actresses Melanie Laurent and Marion Cotillard braved the Parisian chill for the collection, a celebration of the 'persistence of memory' Simons created a dreamlike visual scrapbook of Dior's past and present influences, from Christian Dior's known love of the Belle Epoque and to Simons' own interest in pop culture. Pieces incorporated a selection of mid-twentieth century Andy Warhol sketches, printed or embroidered as flashes of bright color across ecru and cream dresses. Simplicity reigned throughout the collection, from the models' scraped back hair to the blunt lines of the numerous bustier designs. Simons presented his 'memory dresses' in a classic 1920s shift shape, featuring motifs referencing the history of the Dior brand. Classic Dior houndstooth print appeared across woolen dresses and strapless tops, while playful flashes of pink offset the traditional black and white designs. The collection is Simons' second for Dior ready-to-wear after he replaced John Galliano as creative director of the French label last April. Follow us on TWITTER: twitter.com Like us on FACEBOOK: www.facebook.com Now the outside world is criticizing Mao Zedong's "scandalous and evil rule". Today's trend is to liquidate Mao's evil. But a few days ago, the Chinese Communist Party's newspaper, the People's Daily suddenly published a whole page article. This article was titled "A Big Writer Mao Zedong" to sing highly of Mao. Does this action show that the Beijing government is turning leftist? Let's see the report! In the past ten years, it's the consensus inside and outside the party for liquidating Maoism. "Non-Maoism", and "getting rid of Maoism" is very popular in China's elite social circles. In contrast, the memorizing of Mao's articles still goes on in civil life, and is rarely reported by the media. Some Maoists have even been arrested. However, the People's Daily published an 8000-word article on February 28 to sing highly of Mao Zedong. In the article, the writer listed a series of Mao's comments, and even emphasized that officials at all levels should learn Mao's articles. The famous slogan was mentioned: "to conquer the world you need a gun, to rule the world you need a pen". Tie Liu, a Chinese writer: "Mao Zedong is the focus of the CCP's internal struggle. There are two factions. One faction is trying to build up a good image of Mao. They want to show that the CCP's one-party dictatorship can't be changed, that China can't take the constitutional road. This is the restoration dream of the Maoists ...
