Radical Measures against Brazil's "Crackland"

Posted: 21 Jan 2013 06:26 PM PST

Authorities in Brazil prepare to get tough on crack cocaine addicts. Rio de Janeiro city officials are considering passing a law which would make the compulsory treatment of crack cocaine users legal as the nation's infamous "cracklands" grow. In Rio de Janeiro, crack users were driven out to outlying favelas after a 2008 initiative saw police take over the city's main shantytowns, or favelas. Now, in an effort to "clean-up" the city ahead of the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Olympics, officials are pushing for the compulsory treatment of crack-cocaine addicts living in the streets. Health officials, assisted by armed police, would try to convince crack-cocaine users into getting treatment - or take them away forcibly if they resist. The measure is hugely polarizing. Some don't believe in the one size fits all solution. [Leonardo Pecoraro Costa, President of Drug Policy Council of Rio de Janeiro]: "We don't support the treatment, either compulsory or involuntary, as a model to be applied to all drug addicts. In specific cases, properly followed by health professionals, that can be an option, but it has to be part of a bigger plan." An addict, who declined to give his name, also disagreed. [Anonymous, Cocaine Addict]: "I decide if want to go or not (to get treatment). I have gone many times." But according to Silvia Tedesco, a Psychologist Professor at the Federal Fluminense University, in Rio de Janeiro, the country's politicians are trying to find a short-term solution for ...

Man Pushes Shark Back Into Sea

Posted: 21 Jan 2013 03:39 PM PST

A man pushes a shark back into the sea after finding it on tourist beach. Full story: A man in Australia pushed a shark back into the sea, after it was seen swimming in shallow waters near beachgoers. The 6-feet long Dusky Whaler shark was spotted near a beach in Caloundra on Queensland's Sunshine Coast on Friday, causing some tourists to panic. After being pushed back into deeper waters, the shark stayed in the area for a while, before swimming further out to sea. Tourist Tash Kimlin said she shouted out to her two young children when the alarm was raised. [Tash Kimlin, Tourist]: "Do you think you want to get back in the water again?" "No!" Tourist Liam Murie was asked if he was thinking twice about getting back in the water. [Liam Murie, Tourist]: "At first, sort of, but now no. It's too good not to miss." Experts concluded that the shark was likely to be sick and that was the reason it swam so close to shore. The dusky shark can reach 14 feet in length and 765 lb in weight. Italian Marines in 2012 Arabian Sea Shooting Heading Back to New Delhi

Posted: 21 Jan 2013 03:16 PM PST

Two Italian marines charged with killing two Indian fishermen return to New Delhi on Friday, in a special Indian federal court. The two Italian marines charged with killing two Indian fishermen return to New Delhi on Friday. These marines, members of a military security team protecting an oil-tanker, the Enrica Lexie, say they mistook the fishermen for pirates. Last year, Italy challenged India's right to try the sailors, arguing that the shooting took place in international waters off the coast of the Indian state of Kerala. The marines face charges in a special federal trial since Kerala courts do not have jurisdiction to try the case. The Italian government said it is pleased by the decision and says its main objective is to bring the soldiers home. James Bond "Skyfall" Censored in China

Posted: 21 Jan 2013 02:26 PM PST

The new James Bond film, Skyfall has become the highest grossing film in the UK. And today it's opening in China. But it won't be the James Bond everyone else has seen. Chinese censors have taken a knife to several parts of the movie. A scene set in Shanghai where a security guard is killed, and a references to prostitution in Macau won't be seen by Chinese audiences. They also rewrote the subtitles for one scene that references Chinese security forces torturing a prisoner-although, for those who can understand English, they'll still be able to hear the original dialog. As the BBC puts it, Chinese censors often rework foreign films to remove content that is deemed morally or politically damaging. But unfortunately for the censors, the movie has long been out in pirated version, with all the scenes and subtitles intact. The hurriedness, large quantities and high prices of their purchases quickly caught the international media' attention. Staff, H & R Block, Vancouver, Canada: "Chinese buyers are mainly investment entrepreneurs and corrupt officials. Their money come easy. They don't really care about the price. Posted: 21 Jan 2013 08:19 PM PST

Follow us on TWITTER: twitter.com Like us on FACEBOOK: www.facebook.com China's 31 provinces and autonomous regions are holding People's Congresses and CPPCC sessions. In response to CCP General Secretary Xi Jinping's "eight new regulations," representatives say they eat "less than enough," although they recognize the necessity to be thrifty. At the same time some officials say they feel the pressure from the "eight new regulations." Since Jan. 19th, the "two sessions" started to open across Mainland China. CCP mouthpiece Xinhua News Agency reported, the "two sessions" across China respond to Xi Jinping's new regulations. It also declares that the "eight new regulations" will be the "wind wane of sessions across the country in March." Some reports stressed however, that variety and quality of food for the "two sessions" decreased nationwide. CPPCC members Liu Jun joked that the limited portion of the food will prevent the attendees from growing bellies. Guangzhou CPPCC member Eric Tsang said he was underfed. Political commentator Lin Zixu said, the enforcement of Xi's eight regulations will encounter obstacles. Lin Zixu: "This shows us many bad habits have been deeply imprinted in to the CCP officials. It will be extremely difficult to change their usual habits. They will feel extremely uncomfortable, particularly if they are not getting what they are used to." Marxism-Leninism - Chinese Officials Aphrodisiac

Posted: 21 Jan 2013 07:26 PM PST

Follow us on TWITTER: twitter.com Like us on FACEBOOK: www.facebook.com Yi Junqing, Director of the Central Compilation & Translation Bureau (CCTB) has been removed from post. This Vice-Ministerial level official, who had ardently promoted Marxist ideology, ended his political career amidst sex scandals, like many other non-academic officials of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) regime. So far, the CCTB has become a target of public mockery. Yi's dismissal was reportedly caused by post doctoral Chang Yan, who worked at CCTB. Chang disclosed the scandal in her 120000-word diary, published on the internet under her real name. Some netizens exposed more information about Yi's other "girlfriend" subordinates. They were mentioned in Chang's diary, which included over 20 women. The authenticity of the news is not yet verified, but it has sparked heated discussion among netizens in China. They mocked Yi and his female subordinates, and interpreted the role of the CCTB. A netizen questioned why did such adultery occur at CCTB, an organ specialized in the study of Marxism? The CCTB is a Vice-Ministerial department operated directly under the Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). The CCTB's main role is compiling and studying Marxist classic works, and translating key documents of the CCP, as well as the leaders writings. In short, the CCTB "serves the Party". The Chinese web version of the New York Times commented. "Mr. Yi's main job ... was to propagate the ...

300 Prisoners Hunger-Strike Against Beatings to Falun Gong

Posted: 21 Jan 2013 07:18 PM PST

Follow us on TWITTER: twitter.com Like us on FACEBOOK: www.facebook.com Human rights abuses in China's labor camps continue with conditions deteriorating, while the Chinese regime remains so far unable to decide whether to reform or abolish its Reform-Through-Labor (RTL) system, 300 inmates in Heilongjiang Women's Prison went on a hunger strike on January 6, to protest against the atrocities committed by prison guards. The tall prison wall built to isolate the criminals continues to cover and hush the illegal acts committed inside. Today, let's look behind the Iron Curtain. Minghui.org reported on January 20 that, officer Qu Jialiang had beaten Falun Gong practitioner Lu Yinghua on January 6 at 8 pm, until he was stopped by others present. Officer Qu then proceeded to beat another two 62-year-old Falun Gong practitioners, Dong Lingui and Zhang Dexiang, who were in another room. The beatings caused Lu Yinghua to be hospitalized after suffering a heart-attack, and caused Dong Lingui's blood pressure to rise to 160. Eye-witnesses say Officer Qu Jialiang had been drunk and had bloodshot eyes. The incident provoked anger among the inmates, causing nearly 300 prisoners—including Falun Gong practitioners— to protest by going on a hunger strike the following day. Qu Jialiang admitted to his actions, but the prison director Bai Yingxian punished all inmates instead of the officer. It was later learned that the video capturing the incident had been erased.
