"Why is Tibet Burning?"

Posted: 29 Jan 2013 05:10 PM PST

Follow us on TWITTER: twitter.com Like us on FACEBOOK: www.facebook.com The Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) in Dharamsala, India, released a report to explain the real reason behind the Tibetan self-immolations incidents reported in China. The report said that since 2009, nearly 100 Tibetans have self-immolated to protest against rule of the CCP. The CTA indicated that the CCP has always attributed liability to exiled Tibetans and the CTA. However, the international community, including senior EU officials ,have always questioned the CCP's accusations. They clearly stated that the main reason behind Tibetan self-immolation is the regime's policy on Tibet. On January 28, the CTA issued a White Paper, titled "Why is Tibet burning?" The 91 page document describes the situation in Tibetan areas, and the CCP's policy on Tibet. The report also covers self-immolation incidents that have taken place since 2009, and lists the self-immolators' names. The CTA said that the release of the report in English, aims to unveil the truth behind the self-immolation incidents. By revealing the reason behind these incidents and the Tibetan's demands, the report aims to refute the CCP's distortion of facts, according to the CTA. Dawa Tsering (Chairman, Tibet Religious Foundation): "Over a period, the CCP sometimes censured the CTA, sometimes accusing the Dalai Lama. Overseas forces were also blamed, and Lamaism was labeled an evil cult. In short, the CCP always attributes liability to <b>...</b>

It's great fun." From using it to vote anonymously on political matters, to boosting the allure of actors and actresses, to avoiding bad smells of the plague and the canals, the use of masks in Venice has several historic origins. Conspiracy? 9/11 Terrorism Trial Mystery

Posted: 29 Jan 2013 05:14 AM PST

A new 9/11 Conspiracy? Who cut the audio feed during the trial of the 5 men accused of plotting the September 11 terrorist attacks? Full Story: The trial of five men accused of plotting the 9/11 attacks on the United States has run into controversy. Although most of the trial is being held publicly, US security officials have made it clear that some information will be kept secret. An officer sits near the judge and controls a button that muffles the audio feed, when secret information is disclosed. But now the judge, Army Colonel James Pohl, says someone outside the courtroom silenced the audio feed. [James Connell, Defense Lawyer]: "The judge certainly expressed surprise that someone other than the court security officer had pressed the button." According to the Reuters news agency, the issue rests on the controversial practice of extraordinary rendition, as well as evidence obtained through torture. The defense lawyer requested that secret CIA prisons, where the defendants claim they were tortured, be preserved as evidence. The sound was then abruptly cut. The five defendants are accused of training and aiding the hijackers who slammed commercial jetliners into the World Trade Center in New York, the Pentagon and a Pennsylvania field on Sept. 11, 2001. If convicted of charges that include terrorism, attacking civilians and murdering nearly 3000 people, they could face execution. Apple Sacks Supplier For Underage Labor

Posted: 28 Jan 2013 10:29 PM PST

On Saturday, Apple Inc. sacked one of its many Chinese suppliers for using underage workers. Every year, Apple releases an annual supplier responsibility audit. In the most recent one, Apple reported it discovered in one supplier 74 instances of using workers under the age of 16. Apple is attempting to resolve the roots of this problem by tracking third party labor agents that supply underage workers and forge documentation. Although none were found in Apple's final assembly partners, 11 facilities are or were using underage labor. According to the report, all but one did so unintentionally. There are 106 active cases and 70 from the past. The underage workers were typically hired because labor agencies conspired with families to forge age verification documents. The factories did not have the resources to catch it and thus hired the underage workers. Despite droves of suicides at the Foxconn factory in Shenzhen due to poor working conditions and a scandal involving a toxic cleaner, Apple suppliers do face tough standards. These standards cover everything from pay, to overtime, to underage labor and are enforced by the Fair Labor Association. Extensive annual investigations are meant to ensure that factories and suppliers are meeting those standards. The audits cover 1.5 million workers in a total of 14 different countries. A lucky escape for this Chinese motorcyclist who saw a heavy truck overturn before his very eyes and dismounted just in the nick of time. The incident, caught on a traffic camera, happened on January 22 in the eastern province of Zhejiang. The truck's driver reportedly lost control while making a sharp turn at an intersection on a national highway. [Mr Zhu, Truck Driver] "I was driving the truck downhill at about 10 kilometers per hour. The road gets very windy around here and the back compartment of the truck tilted towards the right side and then flipped over, so then the front of the truck had to follow." State media reported that no one was hurt in the accident. The quick-thinking motorcyclist was clearly paying attention to the truck. He got off just before the truck's container grinded his motorcycle across the street. Road safety is a big concern in China. In 2010, Chinese police officially recorded more than 200000 road accidents that lead to deaths or injuries. The number of fatalities were over 65000. Chinese New Year Mass Movement Ever More Crowded

Posted: 28 Jan 2013 10:34 PM PST

China's annual 40-day "Spring Transport" season started on Saturday. This year will witness a record-high 3.41-billion journeys by train, air and road. It's all due to the coming lunar New Year's holiday on February 10th, which is also known as the Spring Festival. It's China's most important holiday, and the one which families try their hardest to spend together. This means, each year, over a billion people have the same plan of using China's transport infrastructure to reunite with relatives. Adding to the strain is that each year more and more migrant workers move from China's rural areas to the country's big cities. For these hundreds of millions, travel can be a monumental task during this season. Public transportation is expected to accommodate about 3.41 billion individual trips nationwide, including 225 million railway trips, 35.5 million by air, and 3.14 billion road tickets. The number of railway passengers will be up by 4.6 percent on last year. To cope with the increase in passengers, the railway department will add 450 more pairs of temporary passenger trains everyday to meet the travel demand. [Wei Ruiming, Operation Dept. of Transportation Bureau]: "Railway capacity has increased by 220000 daily trips over last year. However the capacity is relatively limited considering the travel demand during the Spring Festival holidays. Therefore its hard to meet the demand for travel despite our efforts." Bo Xilai Trial a "No Show" in Guizhou

Posted: 28 Jan 2013 10:25 PM PST

Monday came and went in China, and there was no trial for former communist official Bo Xilai. Dozens of journalists found that out Monday morning after converging outside a courthouse in Guiyang city of Guizhou province. Last Friday, a Hong Kong-based newspaper reported Bo would be put on trial there today. Now, a state-media report suggests the trial might not happen until at least March. The Global Times, a state-run English language paper run by People's Daily, cited an unnamed official as saying Bo would not go to court until after the "Two Sessions." These are the annual meetings of China's rubberstamp parliament, the National People's Congress, the Communist Party's political advisory body, and the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference. [Professor Zhang Zanning, Southeast University] "I don't think the rumor came out of thin air, and now that the trial didn't happen, I don't think it'll happen before the Two Sessions (either). It brings up complicated issues, and the competing factions are still fighting; that's probably why the trial is delayed." The uncertainty over Bo Xilai's impending trial has fueled comments on the lack of transparency within the communist leadership, particularly over a major case like this. Chinese political scholar Liu Junning commented on his microblog Weibo account, (quote), "A grand nation such as China and we can't find a more trustworthy source than rumors." Bo Xilai's case has grabbed global attention. It exposed a deep <b>...</b>

"Praying Hitler" in Warsaw Ghetto Inflames Jewish Advocacy Group

Posted: 28 Jan 2013 06:07 PM PST

A praying Hitler statue erected in the former Warsaw Ghetto in Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan's "HIM" has drawn mixed reactions. Full Story: A new art installation in the former Warsaw ghetto has provoked many mixed reactions. The work, named "HIM," has drawn many visitors. The polarizing piece can only be seen from a distance, and it depicts a praying Hitler. The piece's creator, Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan, has not said what Hitler is supposed to be praying for, but it is supposed to make people reflect on the nature of evil. And the artwork has offended many people, particularly for its placement. The director of Jewish advocy group and museum, the Jerusalem's Simon Wiesenthal Center, condemned the artwork. [Dr. Efraim Zuroff, Director of the Simon Wiesenthal Centre]: "So to put a statute like this in the hall of the Warsaw Ghetto is so tasteless. It is just merely a way of getting a headline and drawing attention to his work and unfortunately in this case we have no choice but to denounce it and to protest which of course leads to publicity for this sculptor." However, many others have praised the artwork, according to the exhibition's curator. [Justyna Wesolowska, Curator]: "It is really funny, for me it's very positive that locally we are receiving only positive reactions. I think that maybe the world only heard two slogans. I don't want to offend anyone, but I have a feeling that not everyone saw this installation. If they had come here and seen the <b>...</b>

Massive Flocks of Birds form Dark Clouds in Israel Sky

Posted: 28 Jan 2013 05:59 PM PST

Bird watchers enjoy a rare synchronized starling flyover as they form black clouds in Israel's skies. Full Story: Huge flocks of synchronized starlings create beautiful sights of moving dark 'clouds'. The phenomenon was spotted in the skies of southern Israel on Saturday. Israeli ornithologists and amateur bird watchers flocked to an open field near the southern city of Netivot to get a glance of the rare phenomenon called murmuration. Professor Yossi Leshem, from Tel Aviv University, says the synchronized movement is to help the birds find food and to create a defence mechanism against birds of prey. These will usually try to hunt individual birds and rarely attack big flocks. [Professor Yossi Leshem, Tel Aviv University]: "There are two reasons why few hundred thousands of starlings are coming together in the late evening because: one is to get the information where they have food and they will follow the ones who found the food; the second one is if a hawk is coming to catch one of the starlings, if it (the bird) is by itself it has a problem, but if they are (part of) a big flock they can open and close and move dramatically and then the hawk cannont catch them, and this is a protection against the hawks." After a long absence of some 20 years, short distance migrant starlings have returned to Israel. This is a phenomenon experts find difficult to explain. Today hundreds of thousands of starlings inhabit Israel, compared to millions in the past, according to <b>...</b>

The Dope Doctor Trial Kicks off in Madrid

Posted: 28 Jan 2013 04:21 PM PST

Spanish doctor Eufemiano Fuentes arrives in court for high-profile anti-doping trial. Full Story: A Spanish doctor accused of masterminding a doping ring in cycling arrived at a Madrid court on Monday. The high-profile trial of Dr Eufamiano Fuentes is beginning almost seven years after police seized anabolic steroids, transfusion equipment and blood bags as part of a probe code-named "Operation Puerto." The blood bags were linked to a host of professional cyclists including German Jan Ullrich and Italian Ivan Basso. Basso, a double Giro d'Italia champion, is due to give evidence next month along with Alberto Contador, the Spaniard stripped of one of his three Tour titles after testing positive for a banned substance. Spain's current anti-doping legislation was not in force in 2006 when the police raids took place. Fuentes and his fellow accused, including his sister Yolanda, are being tried for violating public health regulations. The prosecutor has asked for prison sentences of two years. The World Anti-Doping Agency is optimistic the trial will finally lead to evidence of wrongdoing in other sports being made available.
