Why so many shootings - Media Watch - December 18 - BONTV

Posted: 18 Dec 2012 10:25 PM PST

The shooting deaths by a lone gunman of 20 children, six elementary school teachers and the shooter's mother in Newtown, Connecticut, have shocked the world. Newtown was often seen as a safe place to raise children, but on December 14, 2012, that assumption was turned on its head. As terrible as this incident is, it is not the worst school shooting to take place in the United States. A Korean student shot and killed 33 students (including himself) at the Virginia Tech campus in Blacksburg, VA, in 2007, and high school seniors Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold murdered 12 classmates, one teacher and injured 24 others at Columbine High School on April 20, 1999. Shooting deaths are the result of weak gun regulations. The Federal Bureau of Investigation in the US estimates that there are 200 million privately owned guns in the United States. By some estimates, 40 percent of guns sold to American citizens and legal residents occur without proper background checks, and nearly three quarters of the major mass murders since 1982 have been committed with legally owned weapons. Reaction to school attacks - China Take - December 18 - BONTV

Posted: 18 Dec 2012 08:54 PM PST

Go to bon.tv to watch the full episode The world was shocked on Friday when the news that an apparently disturbed young man entered Sandy Hook elementary school in Newtown Connecticut with several weapons and went on a killing rampage. By the time he shot himself dead, 28 people were dead - 20 of them little children. In China, just a few hours earlier, another elementary school came under attack; this time the man -- reportedly mentally ill - was armed with a knife. For 30 minutes or so he stabbed and slashed, wounding 22 students in the central province of Henan, but fortunately not managing to kill any of them. He was disarmed and detained by police. Both China and the US have witnessed several violent attacks against children over the past years, although the fact that guns are harder to get access to in China has meant that the death toll has been lower. What lessons do net users feel can be learned from these incidents for authorities and schools in both countries? And given the very different outcomes of these assaults what are the views amongst China's online community towards gun control?
