Kid love auto-chat - Media Watch - February 21st,2013 - BONTV China

Posted: 22 Feb 2013 12:45 AM PST

Go to www.bon.tv to watch the full episode The popularity of a new auto-chat app with Chinese students has sparked a debate about social skills under China's one-child policy and the craze for online networking tools. The "little yellow chick" app has attracted more than 2.2 million followers since it was launched in December on Renren, a social networking site. Anyone can post a message to which the "chick" will respond. Although the replies are generated by sophisticated software rather than human direction, young people have been amused by its humorous and frequently surprising answers. It has become the perfect conversation partner for many youngsters. It knows about Lady Gaga and can tell a boy to go get his love if he has a crush on a girl. It often humors its human partner by telling them they are the best-looking guy or girl in the world. It also gives young people a channel to vent their complaints about study pressure, emotional problems and their opinions about social events. Web users even asked it for solutions to Beijing's worsening air quality when China's capital city choked in dense smog in January. Under China's family-planning policy, most Chinese families only have one child, and Zhou believes this feeds into the success of the little yellow chick. The chick is not the first technology of its kind to draw attention. "Xiaotu," a robot-like auto-reply app on the website of Tsinghua University's library, went viral last year after users found it cute and ...

115 public holidays a year - China Take - February 21,2013 - BONTV China

Posted: 22 Feb 2013 12:26 AM PST

Go to bon.tv to watch the full episode When is a holiday not a holiday -- well, when it's a weekend possibly? Although that's not the case according to a document recently released by China's State Council. This paper dealt mainly with plans to encourage Chinese people to spend more time traveling to boost the domestic tourism industry. To this end the Council -- one of China's highest decision making bodies -- vowed to enforce the widely ignored law on statutory 'paid vacation' by 2020. According to Chinese law, companies must offer paid vacation to employees of more than one year's standing in addition to official holidays. But very few employers comply and so few Chinese workers are able to avail of paid leave. However another section of the document has surprised many in China's online community. They were astounded to find that -- according to the State Council's view of the world --they currently have 115 public holidays a year! And how did they come to that conclusion when the US for example has only ten or so? Well, by the simple method of defining weekends as pubic holidays. It then calculates 52 weeks year x 2 and adds these 104 days to the 11 official holidays. And there you are - magic -- a rather generous 115 days of holidays per year.

Mandiant hacking claims - China Take - February 21,2013 - BONTV China

Posted: 21 Feb 2013 08:54 PM PST

Go to bon.tv to watch the full episode A tongue in cheek post from Ye Sheng Xi Mi Lu here following the news that a US cyber-security company has essentially accused the PLA - the Chinese military - of being behind a computer-hacking group. The company - Mandiant - says that the group has attacked more than 140 companies worldwide - mainly US ones - since 2006. And it adds the group is "likely government sponsored" and is similar "in its mission, capabilities, and resources" to a unit of China's People's Liberation Army. It even pinpointed the supposed headquarters of the unit - a white 12-story office building in the Pudong area of Shanghai. China's Ministry of Foreign affairs said making claims based on what it called "such rudimentary information" was irresponsible. It added that China itself has also suffered attacks from Internet hacking and most of these originated from US IP addresses. Meanwhile the Ministry of Defense denied the allegations and insisted China's military has never been involved in any hacking. Our poster from Guangdong doesn't make clear whose story he or she believes, but takes the opportunity to get in a dig about the China's tigh censorship of the Internet

Whose to blame for N Korea? - China Take - February 20,2013 - BONTV China

Posted: 20 Feb 2013 07:00 PM PST

Go to bon.tv to watch the full episode Chinese Foreign Ministry denial of media reports that suggested North Korea had informed Beijing that it plans to conduct more nuclear tests. Spokesperson Hong Lei said he was not aware of where the report originated. Hong also said the situation on the Korean Peninsula remains "sensitive and complicated," and China wants all concerned parties to exercise calm. While our poster seems worried by China's policy towards the North, China's state-owned news agency Xinhua apparently doesn't agree. It recently published an article defending China's North Korea policy against charges that it had failed. The piece blamed the US for the current friction, claiming that its sanctions and threats of force had resulted in North Korea further boosting its military strength. The piece went on to advise the United States to "engage in serious reflection over this situation."
