Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos commends the repossession of a massive swathe of state land illegally expropriated by FARC rebels. Full story: In a ceremony on Wednesday, Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos oversaw the return of lands once illegally seized by Marxist rebels to local farmers. Santos was in the southern city of San Vicente del Caguan. It's taken a central role in the conflict between the government and the country's largest rebel group, the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, known as the FARC. He announced an initiative to return some 500-thousand hectares once stolen by the FARC to local residents. Wednesday's event was focusing on some 130-thousand hectares that had already been recovered. [Juan Manuel Santos, Colombian President]: "And this event today, where we are recovering 130-thousand hectares, is initiating the process. We already have this land completely identified, they were FARC hectares. Specifically, Mono Jojoy had taken them from the state, as the vacant lots belong to the state. He had taken that land." Top FARC rebel commander, Jorge Briceno—alias 'Mono Jojoy'—was killed in combat in 2010. [Juan Manuel Santos, Colombian President]: "When Mono Jojoy was killed we seized his computer and that's where we found out about the properties. And we verified it with other information and realized that one of the huge landowners of this country was Mono Jojoy. And who did he take this land from? The state." An anti-whaling activist group, the Sea Shepherd, released video Wednesday which it says shows a Japanese whaling ship ramming one of its protest vessels in the frigid waters of Australia's remote Southern Ocean. Full Story: A collision in the open sea - and it apparently wasn't an accident. An anti-whaling activist group released video Wednesday which it says shows a Japanese whaling ship ramming one of its protest vessels in Australia's remote Antarctic waters. The conservation group, the Sea Shepherd, said it happened when two of its protest ships tried to stop the whaling ship from refueling with a tanker. [Bob Brown, Former Australian Senator and Sea Shepherd Director]: "This is grand piracy, a complete breaching on a number of fronts of international and Australian domestic law.... I am calling on the Australian government to dispatch naval vessels now, not just to film the slaughter of the whales by the Antarctic fleet but to restore international law." The Sea Shepherd said one of its protest ships was now taking on water in the engine room. The group has clashed with Japanese whaling ships for nine whaling seasons in the southern hemisphere. Bulgarian Cabinet Resigns Amid Mass Protests

Posted: 21 Feb 2013 04:36 PM PST

Bulgarian Prime Minister Boiko Borisov announced the government's resignation following mass protests over high electricity prices. Full Story: This is the moment that Bulgaria's government finally succumbed to the mounting pressure against it from mass protests across the nation. Prime Minister Boiko Borisov addressed parliament on Wednesday and announced the resignation of the government. The move comes after tens of thousands of Bulgarians rallied in several cities in protests which turned violent. Many residents are deeply unhappy over high energy costs, power monopolies, low living standards and corruption in the EU's poorest country. The Prime Minister tried to calm protests by sacking his finance minister, pledging to cut power prices and punishing foreign owned companies - but the measures failed to appease demonstrators. Borisov can now try to form a new government using his rightist party's strong position in parliament. If he fails to do so, an election scheduled for July may be brought forward. Sea Otter Taught to Dunk

Posted: 21 Feb 2013 04:10 PM PST

To help his arthritic joints, a sea otter at the Oregon Zoo shoots hoops for exercise. Full Story: The NBA Trade Deadline is fast approaching, and teams may want to look in Portland for a new asset. But it's not the Trailblazers they should look at - the player is in the Oregon Zoo. Eddie is a 15-year-old sea otter who has lived in Portland since 2000. With otters generally living between 15 and 20 years, Eddie is a considered "geriatric." And this past year, Eddie was diagnosed with arthritis in his elbows. Vets told lead sea otter keeper Jenny DeGroot that Eddie should exercise his joint function, so she taught him to dunk. And the training has worked well so far. The otter picked it up quickly, and if he misses, will try until he makes it. Unfortunately, visitors won't be able to see Eddie dunk, as he only does it for exercise in private. But, as Jenny notes, the exercise is first and foremost for healthcare. For more news and videos visit ☛ ntdtv.org Follow us on Twitter ☛ http Add us on Facebook ☛ on.fb.me

Jetpack a Hit Product at Defence Exhibition

Posted: 21 Feb 2013 03:15 PM PST

The Martin Aircraft Company is showing off its hit new product - a jetpack - at the International Defense Exhibition and Conference in Abu Dhabi. Full story: There are many new military technology demos at the International Defense Exhibition and Conference (IDEX), held in Abu Dhabi. Possibly one of the most interesting developments on display may be one by the Martin Aircraft Company. The Christchurch-based company has developed the Martin Jetpack. The new aircraft is built around a gasoline engine, built by the company to drive twin-ducted fans. According to the company, that generates enough thrust to lift the 254 lbs. of the machine and a pilot of up to 280 lbs. The company is also working on an unmanned version. Originally designed for leisure, the $100000 product has found a market in many sectors, including emergency response and defense. [Glenn N. Martin, Founder of Martin Aircraft Company]: "We've had a lot of interests from special forces. We've had a lot of interest for using it to resupply to take food to troops or a hundred kilograms of something to troops, this can fly and ... helicopter and can fly up and down straight in the city, so crowd control, observation, board patrol. It is a lot more cost effective than the helicopter and you don't need to train pilots to fly. Anybody can fly." The jetpack has taken 10 years to develop, and keeps pilot safety in mind. The IDEX opened Sunday, February 17 and will run until the 21st. For more news and videos visit <b>...</b>

Fans of the Tottenham Spurs were attacked in Lyon on the eve of their team's matchup by a group making Nazi gestures. Full story: At least three people were injured at an English pub in Lyon after aa group of around 50 people attacked the Smoking Dog pub on Wednesday. The pub in central France was full of Tottenham Hotspur fans the night before the matchup between Tottenham and Olympique Lyonnais. The attackers were apparently racially-motivated, making Nazi gestures, and were described as armed with bats, bottles, and other weapons including chairs from another bar. [Liam Kirwin, Smoking Dog Bouncer]: "I've witnessed violence before, but only football violence between football fans. Last night was not football violence, that was racism, that was pure and utter violence against a specific race, nothing to do with football whatsoever. There had been football fans walking around all day, no one was touched. It was Jewish rants and then they attacked the pub." With its roots in north London, Tottenham has a strong Jewish fan base. Witnesses said it took police a while to respond, though a Spurs spokesman said that arrests were made within the hour. Protesters Call for Pussy Riot Release

Posted: 21 Feb 2013 11:26 AM PST

Masked demonstrators in the US protest against the imprisonment of female rockers Pussy Riot outside the Russian embassy in Washington. Full Story: A small but colourful demonstration in Washington against the imprisonment of members of the punk band Pussy Riot. It's been one year since the female rockers' impromptu protest performance in Moscow's main cathedral. Three band members were sentenced to two years in prison for `hooliganism'. One was later released on appeal. Jasmine Heiss from human rights group Amnesty International says the ruling was a blow for freedom of expression in Russia. [Jasmine Heiss, Amnesty International]: "These women are incredibly articulate and they are practicing their art, not just free speech, but dissent through art. I think what's so important for us at Amnesty is remembering that the Pussy Riot case is taking place in a larger crackdown on freedom of expression, on dissent in Russia. We're seeing protesters detained by the thousands, people in the streets working against Putin, speaking out against his return to power and some of the new legislation that's coming through, and we're just seeing a tightening on freedom of expression, on the right to dissent, and on basic human rights in Russia." The brief obsenity-laced stunt, which urged the Virgin Mary to throw out Russian President Vladimir Putin, enraged the Orthodox Church. "The Truth Must Come Out" Says Reeva's Brother

Posted: 21 Feb 2013 10:42 AM PST

Reeva Steenkamp's brother says the family will not be able to move on until the truth of her death is uncovered. Full Story: Family and friends gather on Tuesday for the funeral service for Reeva Steenkamp. But there is no closure. Her brother Adam says the family still wants to know what happened Valentine's Day - when her boyfriend, 'Blade Runner' Oscar Pistorius shot her down in the prime of her life. [Adam Steenkamp, Reeva Steenkamp's Brother]: "The truth must come out. I think its what everyone one needs including us as a family all the interest that has been shown in this case because of Oscar and his international celebrity possibly for all the reasons he wold never expect something will come out of this that is positive but the first thing that must happen is that the truth must come out and then we can all deal with this." Pistorius has told the courts it was an accident -- He says when he fired at a locked door in his bathroom he thought it was an intruder. At his bail hearing Wednesday a detective testified that a witness had heard "non-stop shouting" shortly before Steenkamp was shot dead. Robots to Help Decommission Crippled Fukushima Nuke Plant

Posted: 21 Feb 2013 08:42 AM PST

Japanese developers say applied robotics could help to eventually end the nuclear crisis in Fukushima. Nine teams came together to unveil their latest projects on Wednesday. A robotic suit, which enables the wearer to lift up to 60 kilogrammes, was among the developments. The power suit, presented by Cyberdyne, was originally invented to assist Japan's fast-growing elderly population. But the Fukushima accident has opened the way for new uses. The disaster version of the suit features body plates to protect the wearer from gamma rays, sensors to monitor vital signs, and an air-conditioning system. Chiba University and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries showed off their collaborative effort-- a small mobility robot operated remotely that can provide views from various angles. It helped a larget robatic arm to open a valve of a high pressure pipe. And an amphibious mobility robot, co-developed by Toshiba, can conduct search and observation operations inside water-filled reactor buildings. The Japanese government says it will take two to three decades to fully decommission the station. For more news and videos visit ☛ ntd.tv Follow us on Twitter ☛ http Add us on Facebook ☛ on.fb.me

Rights Group Implicates Mexico Security Forces in Disappearances

Posted: 21 Feb 2013 08:13 AM PST

A Human Rights Watch report alleges the involvement of Mexican security forces in the disappearance of 149 people during the administration of former President Felipe Calderon. Full Story: Ixchel Teresa Mireles Rodriguez holds back the tears as she talks about her husband who she's not seen for three years. Hector Armando Tapia Osollo was taken from his home in June 2010 by armed men claiming to be federal police officers. [Ixchel Teresa Mireles Rodriguez]: "They said they wanted information and if we didn't cooperate they'd kill us right there. They threw us to the floor and asked where out computer was, where the laptop was, and money and guns. They told me to be quiet, and that if I don't cooperate they'd kill him. They took him away and I haven't seen him since." Ixchel's story is not unique in Mexico. Human Rights Watch on Wednesday released a report documenting 249 such disappearances during the administration of former President Felipe Calderon between 2006 and 2012. The report accuses members of Mexico's security forces of having participated in 149 of these incidents. Jose Miguel Vivanco - director of Human Rights' Watch Americas division - says the record of Calderon's government in terms of human rights is "disastrous". He says the new government has a great opportunity to bring justice to the families of thousands of people who have disappeared during the war on drugs. The report urges the Mexican government to take steps such as establishing a national <b>...</b>

Cambodian De-Miners Plunge Into Dive Training

Posted: 21 Feb 2013 07:44 AM PST

Scuba diving in Cambodian waters off the coast of Sihanouk Ville province. But this is work not recreation. These men are mine removal experts, learning to dive to recover munitions sunk during fighting in the 1960s and 70s. The 14-strong mine-disposal team was selected from 40 applicants. But first they had to learn the basics -- starting with how to swim. [Mam Vuth, 43-Year-Old Trainee From CMAC]: "It was so hard to learn swimming or diving in the beginning but now I am doing fine." Allen Tan from the Golden West Humanitarian Foundation which is providing the training said the men are being taught by a former US Navy diver. [Allen Tan, Golden West Humanitarian Foundation]: "They're going to be eventually, when they have enough training, to go into the Mekong or Tonle Sap rivers, and those rivers are very low visibility, maybe 10 centimeters or zero visibility so you can't see. They going to be asked to recover ordnance from the bottom of those rivers and bring it up to the surface. Now from a diving standpoint this is inherently pretty dangerous process. There are some...there's a lot of things that can happen in the river, it's very dynamic environment, as we say, and requires a lot of training." Once the training's over, these men will form Cambodia's first underwater salvage unit, tackling the large quantities of unexploded weapons plaguing rivers and lakes after decades of conflict. Robbers Pull Off Massive Diamond Heist in Brussels Airport

Posted: 20 Feb 2013 03:35 PM PST

Armed robbers dressed in police uniforms carried out a precision heist on the runway of Brussels Airport -- stealing one of the largest shipments of diamonds ever in under five minutes with no shots fired. Full Story: It sounds like the sort of caper carried out in the movies. Only this one involving costumes, a special delivery and truckloads of diamonds played out on the runway of the Brussels airport. Belgian prosecutors say two cars pulled up to these Brinks security vans filled with gems, and seized them just as they were being loaded onto a Swiss plane. [Ine Van Wymersch, Brussels Prosecutor's Office Spokesperson]: "The perpetrators were dressed in clothes that resembled police uniforms, and they broke open the fence that was located between two construction sites, behind the fence there were two construction sites. They made a hole, and they entered the tarmac and they used the same hole in the fence when they made their escape." The robbers, all of eight of them were armed, managed to carry out the entire operation in less than five minutes without firing a single shot. [Anja Bijnens, Brussels Prosecutor's Office Spokesperson]: "They did not shoot, nobody was injured, but the people present, including the people working for the valuables transportation company, the pilot and the co-pilot, were held at gun point." Both cars sped off after the robbery and this one was later found burnt just outside of Brussels. Prosecutors aren't commenting on just how many diamonds <b>...</b>

Lost Penguin Washes Up On New Zealand Coast

Posted: 20 Feb 2013 11:49 PM PST

A young royal penguin is receiving emergency veterinary treatment in New Zealand after being found on a beach over 1200 miles from home. Full story: A young royal penguin that washed up on a New Zealand beach is currently receiving emergency medical treatment at Wellington Zoo. It is said to have kidney failure and only a twenty to thirty percent chance of survival. The penguin is over one-thousand miles away from it's home on Macquarie Island, located half way between New Zealand and Antarctica. [Dr Lisa Argilla, Wellington Zoo Veterinarian]: "So something's happened out at sea, he's not found enough food. Something's gone wrong with his hunting and he's come ashore because he has to molt. Physiologically these birds need to molt once a year." Experts say it's only the fourth royal penguin to make it to New Zealand in over a century. [Collin Miskelly, Te Papa Museum]: "So it could be a slight shift in oceanic currents or a bird that's a bit more adventurous than its companions to come this far north. For most bird watchers it's only something that will happen once in their life." Two years ago an emperor penguin called 'Happy Feet' made international headlines after it landed on the coast. But this smaller visitor is said to have less chance of survival. If the bird survives, it will need at least six weeks to heal before being released back into the wild. US Firm: CCP' Army Behind the Cyber Attacks?

Posted: 20 Feb 2013 08:42 PM PST

Follow us on TWITTER: twitter.com Like us on FACEBOOK: www.facebook.com Recently, a US computer security firm released a report. The report says, cyber attacks aimed at the US, and coming from Mainland China increased severely. A Chinese Communist Party's (CCP) secret military unit in Pudong (Shanghai) is most likely behind the cases. The CCP military denied the allegations. However, outsiders commented that externally, the CCP hacks computers and steals information; internally, it censors the Internet, thus gaining the reputation of a "network rogue regime." The US computer security firm Mandiant released 60-pages report on Feb. 19th, analyzing the recent US cyber attacks. It said cyber attacks came from a group of hackers known as Comment Crew or the Shanghai Group. The hackers are located in a 12-story building in Shanghai, coinciding with the address of military unit code 61398. The New York Times Chinese version reported, unit 61398 is believed to be the 2nd Bureau of People's Liberation Army (PLA) General Staff Department's (GSD) 3rd Division, which is known to play a major role in the cyber espionage. WikiLeaks had released before a cable document of the US State Council. It states, the US has worries about unit 61398 attacking government's websites. However, considering the need of continuing tracking, and diplomacy, the US didn't disclose this problem. After the New York Times, Wall Street Journal and other US media were attacked, Mandiant released a detailed <b>...</b>

Guangdong Defines What Will Disqualify A Party Member

Posted: 20 Feb 2013 08:39 PM PST

Follow us on TWITTER: twitter.com Like us on FACEBOOK: www.facebook.com Guangdong recently set up eight pilot units to deal with disqualified party member(s) based on the newly issued rules for disqualifying party members." Each pilot unit has a new set of rules, some defining participating in feudal superstitious activities and petitioning as a few of the standards used to disqualify a party member. The Chinese media reported that Guangdong Province implemented a policy for disqualifying party members. Eight pilot units were established in Shenzhen, Qingyuan City, Dongguan City, and others. On Feb. 18, Bao'an District of Shenzhen issued standards of disqualification. Each pilot unit established its own standards according to the disqualification policy. Participating in feudal superstitious activities and petitioning would disqualify a party member in Liaobu town of Dongguan City. Once the disqualification is confirmed, correction is required within a time frame. Those who fail to improve will step into the "delisting persuasion" process. Those who refuse the delisting will be subject to the Party Committee's inner-party delisting process. Many netizens believe that listing petitioning as one of the criteria to disqualify a party member is in an effort to retaliate against any party members who address their grievances. It signals the authorities will continue to strengthen stability maintenance measures. Mr. Guo, a resident of Guangzhou, indicated that many party <b>...</b>

Interpretations of the New Xi-Li Administration

Follow us on TWITTER: twitter.com Like us on FACEBOOK: www.facebook.com The "Two Sessions" of the Chinese Communist Party(CCP) are scheduled to be held in March, marking the end of the leadership transition started after the 18th Party Congress. What road will new leader Xi Jinping take for China's future? China's and foreign media have speculated on it. On February 19, CCP official media cited Hong Kong's media, saying that the "Xi-Li new administration radiates positive energy." The media's words of praise on Xi-Li are reminiscent of public expectation of Hu Jintao & Wen Jiabao when they assumed office. Hong Kong's Ta Kung Pao commented on recent remarks made by Xi Jinping and Li Keqiang on the military, on diplomacy, anti-corruption, and on economic development. The commentary said that both have new ideas in all fields, "the new administration radiates positive energy." Commentators indicated that the new Xi-Li administration's initiatives haven't fundamentally solved China problems. (Chair, Social Democratic Party of China) Liu Yinquan: "What Xi and Li have done can only be called liberal actions subject to the CCP system. Without an essential change of this political system, I don't think such internally liberal actions can truly solve problems." Gimmicks Concealed in Beijing's Hacking Denial

Posted: 20 Feb 2013 07:43 PM PST

Follow us on TWITTER: twitter.com Like us on FACEBOOK: www.facebook.com A US cyber security firm traced cyber-attacks to China's army unit, which has aroused global public attention. The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) Foreign Ministry, the Department of Defense, and the military have all repeatedly denied the accusation. They alleged it was a common practice that hackers had tapped IP addresses for the purposes of cyber attacks. Network security experts said there are gimmicks concealed in the CCP's denial. BBC Chinese version website reported on the comment by Steve Tsang, a security expert from Nottingham University. Tsang said that technically, hackers may use third-party computers to launch cyber attacks. But the problem is that many cyber attacks can be traced to the same building which houses China's military unit. If China's military wasn't the hacking origin, has China's Military computers all been hijacked and the IP addresses taken to invade US companies' computer systems? Steve Tsang said CCP's defense is to ask the US to show more concrete evidences; otherwise, it will deny everything. More detailed proof will provide the key for the CCP to access US defense resources and information. Follow us on TWITTER: twitter.com Like us on FACEBOOK: www.facebook.com Wikileaks revealed that the US cable document said local council in Sichuan sent a secret order about Falun Gong. A cadre criticized that the order was passed down to each level of government, after modification and sent down again. It is a huge waste and is also an example of the Chinese Communist Party´s (CCP) poor management. Cable document was sent to Washington DC from the US consulate in Chengdu on 17th August 2009. It contained an order, issued by Sichuan local council. The order stated, to maintain a high degree of vigilance during 10th anniversary of persecution on Falun Gong. A local cadre was angry about the order, he said: 'At the township level of council, every year 200 such orders are issued. This is completely a formality and a huge waste of time!´ In addition, the document also revealed that, despite the suppression, people still can hear the voice of Falun Gong. Falun Gong spread their voice widely via writing messages on banknotes, faxes and audio recordings. It is worth mentioning that the US consulate in Chengdu had received one yuan note three times with "Falun Dafa Hao" written on it. "Quit the CCP! Read Nine Commentaries" phrases were also written on the note. The consulate´s fax machines receive Chinese "Falun Gong Truth" and "Quit the CCP" audio recordings regularly.
